Transition to New Zealand

In introducing the New Zealand portion of the blog, we'd like once again to express our deep thanks to our friend Christine Curtis for her more than generous donation to our travels.  We, as well as all of you who enjoy reading these blog pages, have her to thank in large measure.

Since our trip to New Zealand was an extension of our voyage on Minimus, we decided to post the New Zealand pages here on the Voyage of Minimus blog.

New Zealand has long been high on the list of places we'd love to visit.  So, when we learned that air fare from Tahiti to New Zealand and then back to the U.S. was significantly cheaper than flying directly from Tahiti to the U.S. (?!!), our decision was clinched.

We spent the first 3 weeks of September touring by minivan around both the South and North Islands.  Since it was still winter in New Zealand the temperature was cool, even chilly at higher elevations.  That was more than made up for though by the relative lack of other tourists, the uncrowded campgrounds and the few bugs at night except in the northern part of the North Island.

Touring by camper van is probably the most popular way to visit New Zealand and one sees rental vans everywhere.

  1. Decided to check your blog tonight and JOY I see a lot to read about your NZ visit. I had been checking omick.net on occasion. We are happy to read and see more of your adventures after Minimus.
