New Zealand, 9-6-2017, Wahihola to Ashburton

At Nugget Point our route turned north up the east coast of the South Island.

Our first stop the next morning was to see the Moeraki Boulders, a collection of a dozen or so curious round rocks strewn along the beach.

An amazingly round Moeraki boulder

A sign explaining how the Moeraki boulders were formed.

One of many stone buildings in Dunedin, the second largest city on the South Island.
In retrospect, we'd like to have spent more time in Dunedin, as the stone architecture is quite impressive, most of it dating from Dunedin's heyday in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Instead of exploring downtown, we went searching for more yellow eyed penguins and watched several more of them enter and leave the surf at nearby Bushy Beach Reserve.

A small part of the huge Dunedin cemetery.
